Constitution
 

Article I: Name

The name of this organization shall be known as the Islam Universal, or IU of the Islamic Institute of knowledge.

Article II: Mission

Islam Universal is a youth group designed to help bring together the youth of the community, specifically catering to the pre-adolescent and adolescent years. Through providing them with an Islamic environment filled with knowledge, insight, activity, and fun, the youth will be equipped with the pertinent resources that will empower the youth to mobilize and to develop into the leaders of tomorrow.

Article III: Membership

Membership is open to all interested in helping promote an Islamic environment, and to adhere to the policy that are placed by Islam Universal and The Islamic Institute of Knowledge.

Article IV: Organization

The governing body of Islam Universal is the Executive Council. The Executive Council shall be comprised of the following positions: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Public Relation officer.  The Executive Council has the authority to appoint members to other designated officer positions to fulfill the work of Islam Universal as needed.

Bylaws

Article I: Duties and Powers of the Executive Council

A.     President

  1. To serve as chairperson of the Executive Council, to preside at meetings, and to oversee all activities of Islam Universal.
  2. To appoint a member of Islam Universal to complete the term of any vacant office with the approval of a majority of the Executive Council.
  3. To carry out the affairs of Islam Universal in accordance with these Bylaws.
  4. To plan meetings and promote Islam Universal around the community.
  5. Uphold the constitution to the best of his or her power.

B.     Vice President (first alternate delegate)

  1. To assist the President and preside at meetings in the absence or incapacity of the President.
  2. To organize supplies for all needed events.

C.     Secretary of Finance

  1. To act as the official caretaker of the funds and accounts of Islam Universal.
  2. To dispense Islam Universal funds as directed by the Executive Council.

D.    Secretary

  1. To take minutes and attendance at IU meetings and to maintain records of all pertinent IU  proceedings
  2. To submit the names of those persons comprising the Executive Council after elections are held.
  3. To comprise a list of who is an active member of Islam Universal.
  4. To handle e-mailing and e-mail lists.

E.     Public Relation Officer

1.      Take care of all public relations concerning the IU.

  1. Act with the approval of the IU executive council on all Public Relation matters.
  2. To help maintain member participation and commitment throughout the year.

F.      Event Coordinator

1.   Coordinate and oversee all committee activities.

2.   Coordinate all events and delegating tasks appropriately.

3.   Be aware of and report to the IU board regarding ‘outside events’ so they do not conflict with IU events.  

Article II: Advisor

1.  Act as a consultant to the organization in understanding the institutional hierarchies present within the Islamic Institute of Knowledge.

2. On a monthly basis, meet with the President and/or Vice President to be briefed on the activities of the organization, and address any issues, concerns, or projects that may directly involve the organization’s advisor.

3. Assist the organization with internal and external conflict resolution.

Article III: Term of Office

The Executive Council shall be elected by the membership and shall serve for one year.

Article IV: Elections

  1. Elections for vacant offices will be held in June. Elected positions include: President, Vice President, Secretary, Secretary of Finance, and Public Relation officer.
  2. Candidates for office must announce their intent to run at least two weeks prior to the election.
  3. Candidates for all offices must be in good standing and current active members of Islam Universal at the Islamic Institute of Knowledge.
  4. Leaders may hold no more than one elected Executive Council position during the term of office.
  5. Elections are held by secret ballot. The candidate achieving the most votes for each position shall be declared the winner.
  6. Eligible voters are all Islam Universal members who are present and have been active with Islam universal throughout the year. A list will be made by the secretary and approved by the board to determine who may vote within the election.

Unexpired Terms

  1. In the event of a vacancy, Vice President, Secretary of Finance and Secretary, in that order, will succeed the President for the remainder of the unexpired term. The resulting Executive Council vacancy shall be appointed by the new President, with majority approval by the Executive Council.
  2. All other office and committee vacancies will be filled by appointment by the President with majority approval of the Executive Council. All replacement appointments will end at the conclusion of the unexpired term.

Article V: Removal from Office

1.      An officer can be removed from office by:

A.     Infringement of any of these Bylaws.

B.     Commitment of an act discreditable to Islam Universal.

C.     Failing to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of the position specified in the Islam Universal Constitution and Bylaws or in the official position description.

Any of the following conditions must be met to remove a delegate from office:

A.     Misappropriating Islam Universal funds.

B.     Neglecting duties outlined in the Constitution and Bylaws or as stated in the official position description.

2.      If any of the above conditions exist, the removal procedures are as follows:

A.     Notification and counseling: the person will be given the opportunity to resign or meet specific requirements to fulfill his or her duties as determined by the Executive Council.

B.     A two-thirds majority vote of the Executive Council is required for removal from office.

Article VI: Amendments

Any Amendments to the constitution must be presented as a formal written proposal to the executive council. Religiously based disagreements regarding any amendment shall be considered and referred to one or more religious authorities unanimously agreed upon by the executive council. A two-thirds majority vote of the Executive Council is required to amend the constitution.
